Dear Family of Helen Cary Gooden,

I knew your mom through years of riding together on the bus.  She was a sweet person--always poised, articulate, interested in conversation and current events, and dressed for a social outing, complete with matching hat, coat, makeup and hairstyle, even if she was just going to walk at the mall.  Quite the lady, and I admired her sense of style and composure.

She and I shared a love of films, books, and music, and Mark and I met her a couple of times on the OU campus to watch art films together.  She also joined my mom and I for lunch one time, and shared one of her favorite recipes with my mom. Helen and I exchanged books and Christmas cards a few times.

When my father passed away in March, 2003, Helen consoled me, and shared with me that her own father died when she was a young girl, and she always missed him and wondered what he would have been like.  Helen's memories of her father helped me to appreciate her and other people in my life more fully; I realized how precious life is, and how we need to value our times together, for we never know how long they will last.

Helen was also very encouraging to me, a wheelchair user, because she had used a scooter for so long, and was so proud to have exercised diligently, and monitored her weight and health, so that she could walk on community outings and walk to church again.  I was so happy to see her enjoy walking and being out in the community in recent years.

I miss seeing your mom on the bus, and I miss even more her listening, her words of wisdom, and her support.  She was a dear, kind lady, and I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know her.

Take care, and God's blessings to your family.

Sincerely yours,
Chris and Mark Nanny
